Young mathematicians will be introduced to my very sweet (and incorrigible) monster, Flip. Flip and I made chocolate chip cookies for my friends and family. But guess what happened! She ate some! Oh no... I need some awesome detectives on this case to help me problem-solve this cookie-tastrope. My friends and family are counting on these cookies! Students will be using mental math skills to practice for composing and decomposing numbers between 1-10. As a group, we'll move into non-standard addition (with visual supports) as well as checking our work through nonstandard subtraction. Lastly, students will be given a final problem that builds up algebraic thinking while still being age appropriate. The focus is very much on playing with numbers, because math is fun! Students who are automatic with subtracting numbers between 1 and 10 (for example, able to say what 10 takeaway 7 in less than 3 seconds) will likely be bored by this content as the focus is on building up mental math strategies for numbers between 1-10.
Learning Goals
Students will build up their mental math skills for composing and decomposing numbers between 1-10.
Students will create their own model for adding together several numbers.
Students will check their work through either addition or subtraction (depending on their comfort level).
Students will work together to figure out a math-based problem and collaborate on possible solutions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Math: I particularly love teaching math concepts to elementary-age students. I am confident that there is a way for each child to access math in a way that makes sense to them and even enjoy math.
Teaching 6-8 year olds: I have worked with 1st and 2nd graders for 2 years. I enjoy seeing kids grow both more confident about their skills and excited to learn new things.
