Outline for a 10-Week Online Multiplication Facts Class Objective: By the end of the 10-week course, students will be more confident in their multiplication facts from 1 to 12, by demonstrating an improved recall of the basic facts. This is a more traditional approach to memorizing multiplication facts. While rote memorization doesn't work for all areas of math, it is important for learners to have a quicker recall of their basic multiplication facts to see success in other areas of math. This class is meant to be a place where learners can do just that. Repetition and reinforcement will be used throughout the class to help students gain speed in recalling their facts. A rewards chart will be provided, but it is up to the parent if you would like to use it. Rewards for memorizing can be highly motivating and is different for each child. The rewards chart will be set up so that you can choose your child’s reward each week for memorizing that week's multiplication facts. Some examples for rewards: a small item of interest (toy, lip gloss, stickers, etc.), activity with loved one, ice cream, screen time, etc. What motivates varies from child-to-child, so this is up to the adult in charge. Week 1: Introduction to Multiplication & Multiplying by 1 and 2 -Review multiplication as repeated addition -Learn and practice the 1s and 2s multiplication facts Introduction with real-world examples (e.g., counting pairs, groups of objects). Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Visual aids: Arrays, number lines, and grouping examples. Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Create flashcards for 1s and 2s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 2: Multiplying by 3 and 4 -Understand patterns in the 3s and 4s times tables. -Introduce skip counting as a strategy. Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Interactive matching game Group work: Building arrays and solving word problems. Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Create flashcards for 3s and 4s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 3: Multiplying by 5 and 10 -Explore patterns in the 5s and 10s tables (e.g., ending in 0 or 5). Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Use of the multiplication table to visualize patterns. Real-life examples: Counting money and time. Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Create flashcards for 5s and 10s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 4: Multiplying by 6 -Learn the 6s times table through patterns and grouping. Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Hands-on activities: Use dice rolls to multiply by 6. Identifying tricky facts and finding ways to help memorize them. Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Homework: Create flashcards for 6s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 5: Multiplying by 7 -Introduce the 7s table and connect it to additional strategies. Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Create a multiplication chart with 7s highlighted. Identifying tricky facts and finding ways to help memorize them. Interactive matching game Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Create flashcards for 7s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 6: Multiplying by 8 -Learn the 8s table through visual patterns and doubling strategies. Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Interactive matching game Drill practice: Focus on challenging facts and using tools to help memorize them. Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Create flashcards for 8s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 7: Multiplying by 9 -Explore patterns in the 9s table (e.g., digits adding up to 9). Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Interactive matching game Identify and practice the 9s trick to help memorize Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Create flashcards for 9s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 8: Multiplying by 11 and 12 -Understand the unique patterns in 11s and 12s multiplication. Write: repeatedly write and say out loud their facts for the week to encourage memorization. Identify and practice the pattern for 11s. Practice breaking 12s into smaller chunks (e.g., 10 + 2). In-class and homework: Create flashcards for 11s and 12s facts. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 9: Mixed Practice & Problem Solving -Review all times tables and apply them to real-world problems. Solve word problems involving multiplication. Group competition: Multiplication Kahoot or Jeopardy. Timed test & grade In-class and homework: Practice the flashcards that have been created in the past weeks. Practice memorizing throughout the week. Week 10: Final Review & Multiplication Challenge -Assess mastery of multiplication facts from 1 to 12. Timed multiplication challenge to test fluency. Celebrate progress: Certificates and recognition. Homework: Suggestions for continued practice. This outline ensures students gradually build their skills while keeping learners responsible for their own learning. Each week focuses on rote memorization, but combines foundational learning with activities and some real-life applications.
