Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
In this ongoing class, we will complete practice problems to prepare for the Math Kangaroo Competition. We will go over practice material and previous test questions.

Level 7 is for students in grade 7, Level 8 is for students in grade 8. So this class is for learners in seventh or eighth grade, as to take the Level 7/8 test in March, students would be in seventh or eighth grade.

Because the test is for seventh or eighth graders, anyone in seventh or eighth grade may attend this course. Seventh graders may find some of the problems more difficult, however, that is to be expected. Although Grade 7 and Grade 8 students take the same test, awards are separated between the two grades.

This class does not build on previous classes. Learners may enroll and join the class at any point.

Level 7/8 Test has 30 problems over 75 minutes. (Average of 2.5 minutes per question.)
30 questions (grades 5 - 12), 10 questions for 3 points, 10 questions for 4 points and 10 questions
for 5 points.

Registering for the test is not required for class attendance.
Test Date: Thursday, March 16, 2023
Registration for the test is September 15, 2022, till December 15, 2022, at www.mathkangaroo.org.

Class time:
***This is not a lecture-style class. Learners will be provided with 2-4 minutes per question to work through the problem, simulating the time on a real test. The class will then discuss how learners approached and solved the problems. I will provide tips on how to approach problems, and we will discuss different approaches.
***Because we will only be completing 6-10 random problems per class session, there is not a specific weekly schedule. All problems will come from Level 7-8 tests or practice material.
***The questions should take an average of 2.5 minutes or less on the test, so therefore we will spend more time per question to ensure ample discussion time. As we are practicing for a test with unknown questions and topics, the questions each class session will also bounce around with a variety of questions and topics.

Sample Questions:
~When the five pieces shown fit together correctly, the result is a rectangle with a calculation
written on it. What is the result of this calculation? (A) –100 (B) –8 (C) –1 (D) 199 (E) 208
~The area of the large square is 16 cm2 and the area of each small square is 1 cm2 . What is the total area of the black flower? (A) 3 cm2 (B) 7/2 cm2 (C) 4 cm2 (D) 11/2 cm2 (E) 6 cm2
~ 2021 colored kangaroos are arranged in a row and are numbered from 1 to 2021. Each
kangaroo is colored red, gray, or blue. Among any three consecutive kangaroos, there are always kangaroos of all three colors. Bruce guesses the colors of five kangaroos. These are his guesses: Kangaroo 2 is gray; Kangaroo 20 is blue; Kangaroo 202 is red; Kangaroo 1002 is blue; Kangaroo 2021 is gray. Only one of his guesses is wrong. What is the number of the kangaroo whose color he guessed incorrectly?
