US Grade 4 - 7
In this ongoing class, we will complete practice problems to prepare for the Math Kangaroo Competition. We will go over practice material and previous test questions. Level 5 is for students in grade 5, Level 6 is for students in grade 6. So this class is for learners in fifth or sixth grade, as to take the Level 5/6 test in March, students would be in fifth or sixth grade. Because the test is for fifth or sixth graders, anyone in fifth or sixth grade may attend this course. Fifth graders may find some of the problems more difficult, however, that is to be expected. Although Grade 5 and Grade 6 students take the same test, awards are separated between the two grades. This class does not build on previous classes. Learners may enroll and join the class at any point. Level 5/6 Test has 30 problems over 75 minutes. (Average of 2.5 minutes per question.) 30 questions (grades 5 - 12): 10 questions for 3 points, 10 questions for 4 points, and 10 questions for 5 points. Registering for the test is not required for class attendance. Test Date: Thursday, March 16, 2023 Registration for the test is September 15, 2022, till December 15, 2022, at www.mathkangaroo.org. Content: https://mathkangaroo.org/mks/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Math-Kangaroo-Curriculum-for-grades-5-and-6.pdf Geometry (plane and solid), numbers and algebra (calculations with natural numbers, recognizing multiples, percentages, metric, and more), and logic Class time: ***This is not a lecture-style class. Learners will be provided with 2-4 minutes per question to work through the problem, simulating the time on a real test. The class will then discuss how learners approached and solved the problems. I will provide tips on how to approach problems, and we will discuss different approaches. ***Because we will only be completing 6-10 random problems per class session, there is not a specific weekly schedule. All problems will come from Level 5-6 tests or practice material. ***The questions should take an average of 2.5 minutes or less on the test, so therefore we will spend more time per question to ensure ample discussion time. As we are practicing for a test with unknown questions and topics, the questions each class session will also bounce around with a variety of questions and topics. Weekly Schedule: Week of 6/13/2022: Random problems from 2013 test Week of 6/20/2022: Random problems from 2014 test Week of 6/27/2022: Random problems from 2015 test Week of 7/4/2022: Random problems from 2016 test Week of 7/11/2022: Random problems from 2017 test Week of 7/18/2022: No class Week of 7/25/2022: No class Week of 8/1/2022: Random problems from 2018 test Week of 8/8/2022: Random problems from 2019 test Week of 8/15/2022: No class Week of 8/22/2022: Random problems from 2020 test Week of 8/29/2022: Random problems from 2021 test **No materials are required for this class. Teacher will provide all materials.** Sample Questions: ~There is a square with line segments drawn inside it. The line segments are drawn either from the vertices or the midpoints of other line segments. We colored 1/8 of the large square. Which one is our coloring? ~Rosa wants to start at the arrow, follow the line, and get out at the other arrow. Which piece, if placed in the middle, cannot produce this? Note: The piece can be rotated. ~10 elves and trolls each were given a token with a different number from 1 to 10 written on it. They were each asked what number was on their token and all answered with a number from 1 to 10. The sum of the answers was 36. Each troll told a lie and each elf told the truth. What is the smallest number of trolls there could be in the group?
