Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
In this ongoing class, we will complete practice problems to prepare for the Math Kangaroo Competition. We will go over practice material and previous test questions.

Level 3 is for students in grade 3, Level 4 is for students in grade 4. So this class is for learners in third or fourth grade, as to take the Level 3/4 test in March, students would be in third or fourth grade.

Because the test is for third or fourth graders, anyone in third or fourth grade may attend this course. Third graders may find some of the problems more difficult, however, that is to be expected. Although Grade 3 and Grade 4 students take the same test, awards are separated between the two grades.

This class does not build on previous classes. Learners may enroll and join the class at any point.

Level 3/4 Test has 24 problems over 75 minutes. (Average of 3 minutes per question.)
24 questions (grades 1 - 4), 8 questions for 3 points, 8 questions for 4 points and 8 questions for
5 points

Registering for the test is not required for class attendance.
Test Date: Thursday, March 16, 2023
Registration for the test is September 15, 2022, till December 15, 2022, at www.mathkangaroo.org.

Class time:
***This is not a lecture-style class. Learners will be provided with 2-4 minutes per question to work through the problem, simulating the time on a real test. The class will then discuss how learners approached and solved the problems. I will provide tips on how to approach problems, and we will discuss different approaches.
***Because we will only be completing 6-10 random problems per class session, there is not a specific weekly schedule. All problems will come from Level 3-4 tests or practice material.
***The questions should take an average of 3 minutes or less on the test, so therefore we will spend more time per question to ensure ample discussion time. As we are practicing for a test with unknown questions and topics, the questions each class session will also bounce around with a variety of questions and topics.

Weekly Schedule:
Week of 6/13/2022: Random problems from 2013 test

Sample Questions:
~How many fish will have their heads pointing towards the ring when we straighten the line?
~On a tall building there are 4 fire escape ladders, as shown. The heights of 3 ladders are at their tops. What is the height of the shortest ladder?
~23. Elena wants to write the numbers from 1 to 9 in the squares shown. The arrows always point
from a smaller number to a larger one. She has already written 5 and 7. Which number should
she write instead of the question mark?
