Math Is a Big Joke Featuring Fractions! Dividing and Simplifying Fractions

In this one time meeting we will focus on dividing and simplifying fractions. A decoder puzzle with a funny (maybe corny) joke will be used to reinforce these skills.

Class Experience

Fractions are everywhere! The more students are comfortable with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them, the easier it will be to perform skills such as: solving equations, evaluating formulas, or finding the probability of an event.

In this class, we will spend 5-15 minutes reviewing how to multiply and simplify fractions. We will then spend the remainder of class solving a decoder puzzle (On The Button!) I am a firm believer in giving students think time, so time will be given for students to work independently before we share answers as a group. Instruction will be provided as needed, but students should have a basic understanding of how to add, subtract, multiply and divide before taking this class.
Learning Goals
By the end of the lesson, students will have reviewed:

-using the GCF to simplify fractions
-changing improper fractions to mixed numbers
-finding the reciprocal

I LOVE math! I love finding creative and interesting ways to deliver instruction while helping students build their math sense. After 25 years of teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2 to students with a variety of skill levels, including 5 years teaching online to students learning from home, I feel uniquely qualified to provide learners with the tools they need to become masters of mathematics!
