US Grade 3 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Want to improve math skills in a fun, hands-on way? In this class, we will focus on strengthening our confidence, fundamental skills and reasoning abilities in the world of mathematics. This class will not use either textbooks or worksheets. Instead, we will explore open-ended questions, play games, complete challenges, engage in art projects, and take part in other such interactive activities. This approach will allow learners to strengthen their underlying abilities that they will then be able to transfer to a variety of situations, rather than memorizing facts. It will also help struggling or reluctant learners to view mathematics in a whole new way. The class will begin with a few weeks covering place value and operations. It will then be shaped by the concepts learners need practice in. The list of topics and supplies will be updated as the class goes on. If your learner falls outside of the age range but could benefit from the concepts and approach, please send me a message and an accommodation will likely be made. Learning Goals
Students will strengthen their understanding of concepts, such as place value, multiplication and division. After the first few weeks, topics covered in class will be selected based upon the needs of the learners.
Other Details
Learning Needs
This class is supportive of students with dyscalculia and other math related difficulties, as it introduces visual aids and other useful scaffolds that can be used to enhance learning.
Parental Guidance
Optional activities will be given for learners to expand their learning, some of which will invite family members to get involved. Parents may also wish to supervise the use of scissors and art supplies, to ensure safety and that mess is kept to a minimum.
Supply List
This list will be updated as new weeks are added. Generally learners will need a pair of dice, counters or other small objects, a piece of paper and a pencil.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an elementary school teacher who is passionate about helping students learn to see themselves as capable mathematicians, no matter where they begin their journey. I have had great success with students of various levels using the techniques I will be drawing from in class. I have also taken part in many professional development workshops designed to strengthen my practice as a mathematics educator, such as workshops by Carole Fullerton.
