US Grade 1 - 2
In this one-time class, learners will be learning about coins, bills and the value of money using an interactive pretend grocery store game! At the beginning of class, the learners and teacher will have an introductory discussion about food and where it comes from. Some discussion questions may include: “Where does the food in your pantry come from?”, “How does food get to the grocery store or onto the shelves?”, “Who works in a grocery store?”, “Is the food at the store free?”, “Do we know how much it costs?” “How do we purchase or buy food?”. Visuals and pictures of different grocery stores will be used in class. Next, learners will help a cashier identify and sort the coins and bills in the cash register. Learners will identify the value of each coin and each bill. Then, learners will discuss how to find the price of items around the grocery store. Learners will choose some items to purchase, and then calculate the cost of their purchase using addition. Finally, learners will choose the correct combination of bills and coins to pay for their chosen grocery items using simple addition. Learners will then calculate how much change they would receive if they pay with $20, $15, $10, etc. using simple subtraction. Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, to help the students to relate to the lesson and to introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 6 to 8, or 1st to 2nd grade. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
