Let's keep our math skills strong as we finish up the school year! All of math builds on previous concepts, so I will ask the kids what they already know about each new problem or concept and we will go from there! I will demonstrate the math problems on the whiteboard and students are welcome to take notes. Students will learn new concepts from several chapters at a time, get practice working them out in class, and then complete the lessons from those chapters at home. Parents will be responsible for grading lessons. Classes will be recorded in case you miss one. I am happy to adjust the schedule based on the needs of the students. I am also happy to offer a continuation class for summer if there is enough interest. Class 1: Lessons 24-27 (Missing numbers, subtraction stories, drawing pictures of fractions, multiplication as repeated addition) Class 2: Lessons 28-31 (Multiplication table, multiplication facts (0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, subtracting with regrouping, word problems about comparing) Class 3: Lessons 32-35 (Multiplication facts (9's), writing numbers through hundred millions, naming mixed numbers, two forms of money) Class 4: Lessons 36-39 (Fractions of a dollar, reading fractions and mixed numbers from a number line, multiplication facts, reading an inch scale to the nearest fourth) Class 5: Lessons 40-43 (Capacity, subtracting across zero, missing factors, multiplying multiples of 10 and 100 and rounding, adding and subtracting decimal numbers) Class 6: Lessons 44-47 (Multiplying 2-digit numbers, associative property, naming lines and segments, division, other ways to show division) Class 7: Lessons 48-51 (Multiplying 2-digit numbers again, stories about equal groups, adding and subtracting decimal numbers, adding numbers with more than 3 digits, checking 1-digit division) Class 8: Lessons 52-55 (Subtracting numbers with more than 3 digits, stories about equal groups again, 1-digit division with a remainder, rounding numbers to the nearest thousand, multiples/factors) Class 9: Lessons 56-59 (using pictures to compare fractions, rate word problems, multiplying 3-digit numbers, estimating arithmetic numbers) Class 10: Lessons 60-63 (rate problems with a given total, remaining fraction, 2-step equations, multiplying 3 or more factors, exponents, polygons)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I love teaching and I love to learn! When I was a kid, I loved reading and correcting people's grammar and spelling. Fast forward to today: I am a homeschooling mom who tutors other children and teaches English as a Second Language online to students in Asia. This allows me to be constantly learning alongside my students and my own children. I still have time to read for fun AND read to increase my own knowledge. Yay!
I attended the Master's University, graduating with honors in 2002. My bachelor's degree was in Biblical Studies, and I also took as many classes as possible in Intercultural Studies and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
When I began having kids and decided to homeschool, my learning took a different route and I began reading all about philosophies of education and how children learn best. Our family joined a local community of homeschoolers (Classical Conversations) where I learned many new things myself AND began to teach! I found my passion in teaching writing and grammar. I have years of experience using the Lost Tools of Writing as well as the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) and just became an accredited Registered Instructor for IEW! Besides teaching in our local homeschool community, I also provide private online tutoring in writing, grammar, and beginning Latin.
I've been teaching ESL online for almost 3 years, which has helped me to be comfortable teaching in an online format and also strengthened my English grammar skills. I've earned an online TESOL certificate from the company I work with.
My goal in teaching is to inspire students to want to learn more, and to be equipped with the tools to learn HOW to learn anything. I believe in connecting with my students and letting them know I value them and their thoughts. My greatest joy is when one of my students says they want to be a teacher when they grow up!
On a more personal note, I recently moved back to my home state of Oregon with my husband, five kids, and a chihuahua. Within weeks of our arrival, we also added three kittens, a few sheep, and a handful of chickens to our pet collection. I love to travel and experience other cultures; I have been to Mexico, Japan, China, Thailand, Croatia, and Turkey. However, my favorite place to be is in my own home, especially in the kitchen! Our family loves cooking and baking, as well as reading aloud together.
Feel free to ask if there's a class you'd like me to offer, or to request a new time to be added to an existing class!
