US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
This is a great class for learners who are new to division, learn best with hands-on learning, or want to be able to discuss division instead of just memorizing the facts. Students will use items around their house to show division visually. Students will be given a number and will make equal groups using items they have around the house. I prefer to use a bag of beans because they are easy to manipulate, affordable and there are so many in a bag. You can use anything you like, as long as you have 50 of whatever item(s) you are using. We will then use these visuals to create a written division equation for each example. During this time we will use the visual to discuss what dividends, quotients and divisors are. Week of 6/5: Division Introduction and Vocabulary Week of 6/12: Equal Grouping and Written Equations Week of 6/19: Factors, Factor Families Week of 6/26: Review Game-Division Problems
Learning Goals
Students will better understand how to identify dividends, divisors and quotients to solve division equations.
