US Grade 2 - 3
In this game-based math class, students will learn 2nd grade math standards tied to the CCSS. We will work on understanding numbers within 100, comparing numbers, addition, subtraction, word problems, time, money, fractions, geometry and more! Each 2nd grade standard will be reviewed by playing a Jeopardy style game show together! Class Structure: 🔵Welcome & Introductions 🔵Introduce weekly math target 🔵Begin game show! How will I teach? What is my teaching style? 🟡Students will take turns getting to choose the category and point value. 🟡Students will have time to solve the problem on their own. 🟡I will support, explain, teach and reteach if students do not understand the problem. 🟡I strongly believe in direct instruction combined with student choice for the best learning outcome! Students need to know how to correctly solve a problem, but have choice in their strategies and how they would like to share their work. How will learners get to interact with me? Every learner will have an opportunity to choose the questions. Every learner will answer each question. All students will show their answers on a whiteboard or by writing on the screen. I always instruct students to use a thumb to show understanding. Thumbs up means they have the answer and do not need help. Thumb in the middle means they may need help soon, but can continue working. Thumb down means they need me to immediately check in and help them solve the problem. After each question, I will show all students how to correctly solve it so they can learn from any mistakes. I tell every class that mistakes are okay! Mistakes are how we learn and grow. If your child has specific needs/preferences (being called upon, needing extra time etc.), please reach out to me so I can adapt the class to fit the individual needs of every learner. We may occasionally use video clips, a digital whiteboard and pencil and paper to help us understand the math concept. Every week will be a themed digital game show! Teacher expertise and credentials
I was a 2nd grade teacher for many years before joining Outschool. I have also tutored students in reading, math and science after school. In my 2nd grade class, we focused on mastering the 2nd grade Common Core State Standards (now called Ohio's Learning Standards) through engaging, hands-on learning. I created a classroom environment where learning was fun and engaging and all students were welcomed. I try to make sure all students are able to participate in some way while still respecting their comfort level with a new teacher and new classmates.
