When the class begins, I will ask students what their experience has been with multiplication. I like to get an idea of their background knowledge. Then, I will introduce the strategy and provide the children with two examples that I complete for them. Then, we will move into practicing together, having the students share the steps taken to solve each problem. Lastly, I will give the students several multiplication problems to try on their own. The first two problems will be the same. Once these are discussed, each student will get their own problem to solve and share with the class.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of multi-digit multiplication by using the area model of multiplication strategy.

A 12x12 digit multiplication chart will be provided by the teacher.
