Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten
Math Explorers is an adventure club for math loving five and six year olds. Each week we will visit a biome (such as tundra, coral reef, kelp forest, tropical rainforest, etc). While we explore the biome we will practice using math and our creativity.

We will focus on early math concepts and skills such as:
- Adding
- Subtracting
- Skip counting
- Odd and evens
- Greater than/less than
- Shapes
- Matching
- Measuring lengths

This is a highly interactive class. Students will learn through a mix of hands-on activities, discussion, and visual presentation.

Lesson structure:

Introductions
Learners will be asked to introduce themselves and share something about themselves with the group.

Biome Clues
Each week we will explore a different biome. Learners will get to guess what the day’s biome will be based on provided clues.

Map Time
We will open a presentation showing where in the world the day’s biome is located and then learn about the animals and plants that live there.

Math Concept
We will introduce the day’s math concept.

Activity
Learners will have an activity in which they can practice the day’s math concept themed around the day’s biome. Students will get to draw or create something which they will be able to share in the next section.

Sharing
We will take turns sharing with each other what we created during the activity time.

Goodbyes

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from American Military University
Hello! My name is Arwen, and I am absolutely passionate about space science, the environment, and teaching! I offer courses about the solar system, planets, natural processes, soil, and the environment. I am a NASA Solar System Ambassador and science author. My Master's is in Space Science, and I have undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Ecology, and Natural Resource Management. I am currently working on a doctorate in STEM education.

I believe curiosity and learning are human instincts. I try to honor that by asking the learners lots of questions and encouraging them to think about information in new ways.

When not teaching, you can find me hosting "Found in Space: A Science Podcast for Kids and Teens" or playing Dungeons and Dragons and exploring the Southwest with my three homeschooled kiddos and our big, fluffy orange cat named Moose!

I like to keep class sizes small so each learner can get individualized and full attention. Please feel free to reach out.
