Before we meet, I ask parents to fill out a questionnaire to help me understand what the student is working on and what are the issues causing difficulty. I will choose activities based on this information. It is important to register a week in advance in order to work through this information. During the live meeting, I will present the student with a number of math activities to do and we will discuss them as I observe the student's skills and methods. Activities may go from basic counting...
The student should become familiar with me as a teacher and with the Zoom platform. The student will be given opportunities to display skills and will be encouraged to think positively about math.
I have taught all levels of school from Grade 1 to college. I'm a math specialist, and I have tutored math privately for over thirty-five years. My students have gone on to success in schools and a wide variety of careers from ballerina to engineer to doctor to leader of a provincial political party. My degrees include BSc, BA Honours Math, BA Foreign Languages, and MA Education, and I have teaching certificates (no longer active as I am semi-retired) from Ontario, Ontario French schools, and Newfoundland.
Questions will be scanned and shown on-screen. Students must have: Microphone Camera Markers (dark colour please for visibility) Small whiteboard (to hold up to camera), or LOTS of clean white paper a comfortable place to sit and work on the computer and to write. Please be sure to answer the parent questionnaire before we start the evaluation.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will be presenting various questions and problems and activities to the student and observing one-to-one. In most cases we find it easiest to use a small whiteboard and marker, and hold it up to the screen. You can also use lots of paper and markers. A microphone and a camera are essential for thiss evaluation.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
