Class Experience
US Grade 8 - 9
This is an Algebra course that will meet once a week for 30 minutes. In this ongoing class, I will walk students through the skills needed to understand and confidently answer problems in Algebra. This course is a requirement and provides great preparation for Geometry and Algebra 2. Each week during class we will cover a skill from Algebra. Some weeks we will carry over the previous week's skill to strengthen our understanding. The skills we will cover will include the order of operations, the distributive property, expressions, solving problems with integers, equations, inequalities, exponents, scientific notation, rational numbers, slope-intercept form, point-slope form, distance and midpoint, speed, time, distance, transformations of shapes, angles and triangles, systems of equations, finding area/volume/surface area of figures, the Pythagorean theorem, solving polynomials, and data analysis. Every class, students will be welcomed and we will spend the first few minutes saying hello and greeting one another. Then during class, I will introduce our topic for the day. I will then demonstrate the steps needed to solve the problem and have the students watch the first few problems. Next the students will work through several problems with me and be encouraged to talk me through solving the problems. After this, students will be able to do our last few problems of the class on their own using the steps we've practiced. We will end every class rating our understanding from the topic that day which will help the student and myself as we prepare for the next week and knowing if we should review the topic or we can continue on. Students are encouraged to take notes during class. It is encouraged that they watch the first few problems and then as they start to solve with me, they are writing the problems as they go with me through them. Towards the end of class they will need paper and pencil to solve the last few problems on their own. As students get stuck or held up on a problem, we will use it as a time to encourage them and help them figure out the next step to solve. Materials recommended for the course are pencils, paper, a scientific calculator and a good attitude. Worksheets will be provided for students to work on following classes but not required to complete. It is highly recommended that students work on the worksheets as this will help them fully master the skills being taught during class. By the end of the course, learners will be able to answer questions from Algebra problems confidently. Learners will also be equipped and ready for Geometry. As students enter Geometry, they will have already been introduced to the material from the first few chapters and enter the course confidently. - Week 1 (Aug 13): Order of Operations, Distributive Property - Week 2 (Aug 20): Expressions, Equations - Week 3 (Aug 27): Equations/Inequalities - Week 4 (Sept 3): Inequalities/Integers - Week 5 (Sept 10): Inequalities - Week 6 (Sept 17): Exponents - Week 7 (Sept 24): Exponents/Scientific Notation - Week 8 (Oct 1): Rational Numbers - Week 9 (Oct 8): Rational Numbers - Week 10 (Oct 15): Slope - Week 11 (Oct 22): Slope - Week 12 (Oct 29) Speed, Time, Distance - Week 13 (Nov 5): Speed, Time, Distance - Week 14 (Nov 12): Transformations - Week 15 (Nov 19): Transformations - Week 16 (Nov 26): Equation Review - Week 17 (Dec 3): Equation Review - Week 18 (Dec 10): Angles and Triangles - Week 19 (Dec 17): Angles and Triangles - Week 20 (Jan 7): Angles and Triangles - Week 21 (Jan 14): Distance Formula/Midpoint Formula - Week 22 (Jan 21): Systems of Linear Equations - Week 23 (Jan 28) : Systems of Linear Equations - Week 24 (Feb 4): Classifying Solids/ Volume - Week 25 (Feb 11): Volume - Week 26 (Feb 18): Surface area - Week 27 (Feb 25): Surface Area - Week 28 (March 3): Pythagorean theorem, - Week 29 (March 10): Monomials/Polynomials - Week 30 (March 17) : Polynomials/Binomials - Week 31 (March 24): Proportions/Similar Figures - Week 32 (March 31): Data Analysis - Week 33 (April 7): Data Analysis - Week 34 (April 14): Review - Week 35 (April 21): Review - Week 36 (April 28): Review - Week 37 (May 5): Geometry Prep - Week 38 (May 12): Geometry Prep
