In this on-going online class learners will explore the foundations of Math. Math provides opportunities for developing important intellectual skills in problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning, creative thinking and communication. Math enables ‘thinking strategies’, to ‘solve a problem’ and to ‘use logical reasoning, in which students can use in all subjects. Each week learners will learn a new Math skill. Each session is a stand alone lesson, learners can join any lesson and be able to join in and learn that skill. Course Outline: Week beginning September 27th - Day 1 focus: Counting objects and starting to group them. Day 2 focus: Represent objects. Children learn that one object can be represented by another. Week beginning October 4th - Day 1 focus: Sort objects. Children will look for patterns and group. Day 2 focus: Count forwards. Week beginning October 11th - Day 1 focus: Count backwards. Day 2 focus: Count one less. Week beginning October 18th - Day 1 focus: Count one more. Day 2 focus: 1 to 1 correspondence. Week beginning November 1st - Day 1 focus: Compare numbers. Day 2 focus: Compare up to 10 objects. Week beginning November 8th - Day 1 focus: Compare numbers. Day 2 focus: Greater than, less than and equal to. Week beginning November 15th - Day 1 focus: Order objects. Day 2 focus: Using a number line. Week beginning November 22nd - Day 1 focus: Ordinal numbers. Day 2 focus: Addition. Week beginning November 29th - Day 1 focus: Identify what each digit in a number represents. Day 2 focus: To know number bonds to 10. Week beginning December 6th - Day 1 focus: Children practise subtraction using ten frames and cubes with subtraction stories. Day 2 focus: Partition using subtraction stories. Week beginning December 13th - Day 1 focus: Children will learn how to subtract by counting back and using a number line. Day 2 focus: Using fact families to subtract. During these lessons there will be discussions, activities, modelling from the teacher and independent learner opportunities. These lessons are designed for learners who already can count to 20. Paper and pencil or whiteboard and whiteboard pen is all that is required for these lessons. If learners have cubes or counters that they can use during the lesson also that would be great but not essential.

Supply List
Paper and pencil or whiteboard and whiteboard pen. Counters or coins or cubes for counting, these extra resources are not essential. Learners can still participate with out counters, counters or cubes.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hi! My name is Mrs Douglas. I have been a Primary School teacher for 11 years and an Assistant Headteacher for 5 years. I am passionate about teaching children in an inspiring and motivating way! I specialise in child-initiated learning for 3-6 year olds and project based learning for 7-10 yer olds. From academic subjects to wider curriculum subjects, I believe children can learn these skills through their interests and lots of fun! I love nature and enjoy exploring in all weathers!
