Math: Basics of Calculus (an Introduction to Derivatives and Integrals)
I will prepare your student to begin learning calculus by teaching basic forms of derivatives and integrals. The concepts I will present are foundational to calculus and are central to almost every topic in an AP Calculus course.
What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursAssessment
During the last 5 to 10 minutes of class, I will distribute a link to an optional quiz that I created in Google Forms. This quiz will contain at least one example of each type of problem we solved in class. Students will be encouraged to complete the quiz after class to obtain practice at solving calculus problems. The quiz will be open until the end of the third full day following class.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
In this 1 hour class, I will introduce your student to the math they would encounter for the first time if they enrolled in a first year calculus course (such as AP Calculus or Calculus 1). I won't cover the entire curriculum of a first year calculus course in this class. Instead, I will introduce your student to a handful of mathematical rules (involving differentiation and integration) that they would repeatedly use across different topics in a first-year calculus course. My goal is to equip your student with a toolbox of mathematical rules so that they have a solid foundation for learning calculus. During class, I will use a whiteboard within Zoom to draw formulas and work though problems one step at a time. At various points during class, I will encourage participation by asking the students in class a question about an upcoming step in a problem. I will encourage students who think they know the answer to respond to my question by sending me a direct message in Zoom. During the last 5 to 10 minutes of class, I will share a link to an optional quiz in a Google Form. This quiz will contain practice problems similar to the problems we solved in class. Your student will receive immediate feedback to each answer they submit while completing the quiz. The quiz will be open until the end of the third full day following class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the following calculus skills:
1. how to calculate a derivative using the definition formula
2. how to calculate a derivative using the power rule
3. how to calculate a derivative using the product rule
4. how to calculate a derivative using the chain rule
5. how to calculate an antiderivative using the power rule
Other Details
Pre-Requisites
Students who enroll in this class should have math skills at the level of Algebra 2 and preferably some experience with Trigonometry as well.
Supply List
During class, each student should have access to a basic calculator that can add, subtract, multiply, divide, square numbers, and find square roots.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
In my primary role as a teacher, I teach statistics to college students. I have 12 years of experience teaching this subject. In my side role, I am an online math tutor. I have 5 years of experience tutoring students in a variety of math subjects ranging from Prealgebra to AP Calculus AB.
