Class experience
Students use simple shapes (squares, rectangles, triangles, octagons, polygons!) to create polygon self- portraits. Students will identify, describe and define different types of polygons. The art of Pablo Picasso is used as a starting point for the activity as they go on a "Polygon Scavenger Hunt" and investigate Picasso's paintings to discover the different "polygons" within the paintings. Students will improve their geometry skills and understanding of polygons while at the same time learning about famous artist, Pablo Picasso and his use of geometric figures in some of his works. They will use their understanding of what polygons are to create artwork which will reflect their understanding of some of Picasso's Cubist style.
Integrating the arts with other subject matter helps improve students' comprehension and understanding of the subject, especially students with an artistic bent. Seeing how math is used in many ways can help struggling students come to an understanding and even begin to enjoy the subject. I founded and operated a small private school with an arts-integrated curriculum. I've seen the enjoyment this way of teaching has brought to some students. I love teaching this way!

Construction paper, scissors, glue (provided by students). Please have your Learner's materials readily available off to the side during the beginning of the lesson. We will not do the project until the end. They should not have the materials in front of them during the teaching part as it can be a distraction. However, we also do not want to lose time looking for our materials when we are ready! :)
