4 live meetings
3 in-class hoursClass Experience
We will meet 4 times to create original art using functions in Desmos (free online graphing software). This is a project that has been successfully created by different levels of math learners. Along the way we will be learning how to limit domain and range, how to transform a function and to appreciate the beauty of math. Students will create art while discussing and sharing the work they are completing. Projects will be shared with the teacher so we can appreciate each others work. Our interaction will be chatting and giving brief instruction on how to use functions for art. Students will discuss images they want to create and what functions might be best to use. Students will show a grasp of limiting domain and range using their artwork as well as exploring different types of functions such as quadratic, exponential, linear, cubic as well as trigonometric functions. Students do not need prior knowledge in order to work on this project. We will be exploring and enjoying the process together. Day 1: Introduction to Desmos. We will work through a tutorial that the teacher has created to make a simple piece of art. Day 2: Students will discuss images they want to create and what functions might be best to use. Day 3: Students will continue to work on projects and make sure they know how to shade and how to animate. Day 4: Students will complete projects and share with the class.
Learning Goals
Students will show a grasp of limiting domain and range using their artwork as well as exploring different types of functions such as quadratic, exponential, linear, cubic as well as trigonometric functions. Students do not need prior knowledge in order to work on this project. We will be exploring and enjoying the process together.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be using Desmos.com. In order to work on the same art piece for multiple days and save it, you must have a desmos account. You may create your own account or login through your google account. Desmos does not collect user information and is COPPA compliant (which is to say that it does not do data mining and is used for educators.
Supply List
This will all be done online, you might want paper to sketch out your idea but it is not necessary.k
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Utah Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Mathematics from Utah State University
Bachelor's Degree from Brigham Young University
I am a math educator with a Masters of Mathematics. I believe math is a fascinating subject when the foundation is taught properly.
