Counting on is a strategy where students begin to move away from relying solely on counting concrete objects to add, and begin to use mental math to solve addition problems. Instead of counting each object, finger, etc, we put the greater addend(part) in our head and "count on" the other addend to find the sum. For example, 4 + 2 : instead of counting everything (1,2,3,4,5,6) we start with the 4, put that in our head, and count 2 more (5,6). This is a great way to begin to build fact fluency. In this interactive class, students will learn through discussion, demonstration, slides, guided practice and independent practice. Students will need at least 15 small COUNTERS (cubes, coins, beans, cheerios, buttons, etc) and a small CUP, BOWL or CONTAINER. They will also need paper/pencil or whiteboard/marker. Prior knowledge: Students will get the most from this class if they are able to: ~recognize what number comes right after a given number without having to start at 1 (ex: what number comes right after 6?)
Learning Goals
Students will begin to use mental math in the form of counting on. They will be able to begin with the greater addend and "count on" the other addend to find the sum.

Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello and welcome! My name is Ms. Sarah. I am a credentialed teacher with 18 years of experience teaching in the public, private, and online school settings. Most of my years spent teaching have been in first grade, which I love. I enjoy teaching Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. I have a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with specialization in Early Childhood. I also have a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction.
I like to teach lessons that are interactive, engaging, meaningful, and fun. I want students to not be afraid to take risks in learning. Even if they don’t get the correct answer right away, that’s ok, as long as they try their best. Learning is an ongoing process and everybody learns at different rates and through different methods and styles.
I love animals and I have lots of pets, including dogs, birds, and bunnies. I also enjoy baking, tap dancing, and learning new things. I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
