Class Experience

In each Monet Masterpiece class, we'll create a beautiful artwork together, step-by-step! After a brief introduction covering part of Monet's career, students will follow along with a teacher-led demonstration to create their own miniature masterpieces.
Although specific instruction will be provided, students are encouraged to add their own unique, creative details to their paintings & drawings. Throughout the class, we will cover a range of artistic techniques and subjects, which students can apply to artworks they create on their own!

"Claude Monet, All Day" week will focus on the work of artist Claude Monet, a painter who was one of the founding members of the Impressionist movement in the late 19th- and early 20th-century. One of the first successful abstractionists, he painted many landscape and plein air scenes that focused on depicting the particular qualities of light in a scene, rather than strict realism. His use of the soft lens and sparkling colors are some of the reasons his work remains so popular today!

Each day in class, we will learn a little about Monet's life and create a painting or drawing inspired by one of his artworks.
The masterpieces we'll use as inspiration for our artworks are:
Class 1:  "Woman with a Parasol," 1875 (oil pastel)
Classes 2 & 3:  "Water Lilies," 1916 & "Weeping Willow," 1918
(we'll work on these two concurrently; paint the backgrounds in week 2, oil pastel to finish in week 3)
Class 4:  "The Japanese Footbridge," 1889 (oil pastel)

**Although each demonstration will be finished by the end of class, students who work more slowly may need or wish to continue drawing after we have signed off for the day. Everyone works at a different speed, and it's better to take our time than to rush!

As a traditional classroom teacher, many of the lessons I designed were inspired by the work of master artists throughout history. This class combines all of my very favorite things: artist studies, art history, drawing, painting, and still leaves room for each student's unique creative spark. I'm excited to share these quick, fun lessons with my students!
