Assessment
Feedback will be provided to students through personal written messages and/or video recordings throughout the course.Class Experience
***This course is a FLEX class-- lessons are prerecorded and available for viewing at the students' convenience.*** This class is for aspiring artists who love the paintings of Vincent van Gogh! In each lesson, we'll use oil pastels to emulate van Gogh's textured, fluid painting style as we create a drawing inspired by his artworks. Each video we'll begin by viewing several of van Gogh's artworks and learning a little about his life. Then, students will follow along with a teacher-led demonstration, to create their own artwork --you're encouraged to add your own unique details as desired! We will end each class with a beautiful, completed drawing*. Technical skills we will practice include: drawing from observation, creating movement & texture, optical mixing, and color blending. In addition to video lessons, this course will provide collaborative storytelling activities and artist games each week that will allow students to exercise their creativity and interact with one another within the Outschool classroom message board. Art can be even more fun when we experience it together! The course will reference the following artworks: Lesson 1: "Road with Cypress and Star," 1890 Lesson 2: "Sunflowers," 1888 Lesson 3: "The Bedroom in Arles," 1888 Lesson 4: "Starry Night," 1889 *Students who work more slowly are encouraged to pause the video as needed. Everyone works at a different speed, and it's better to take our time than to rush!
Learning Goals
Students will practice using oil pastels while developing fundamental drawing skills including: drawing from observation, creating movement & texture, optical mixing (color theory), and shading. It is a goal of this class that students will also become more confident and fluid in their drawing, and better equipped to construct their own creative artworks.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Younger students may need some help to set up their art space before class begins.
We will be discussing van Gogh's life and works, including the end of van Gogh's life. Although the subject will be discussed briefly and in an age-appropriate manner, we will mention the fact that he ended his own life. The biography sections last 5-10 minutes at the beginning of each video, and can be skipped without affecting the drawing lesson if desired.
Supply List
Materials list: 1. Oil pastels 2. Construction paper 3. Ruler or straight edge (for lesson #3) More information: *1. I'll be using the Pentel set of 50 colors. Sometimes I refer to specific colors (because my live students often ask), but we also discuss color substitutions and experimentation. Cray-Pas is another good and inexpensive brand, but as long as students have a basic color set, including black and white, you can make it work! *2. I'll be using size 9x12" in blue and black for my backgrounds, but students are encouraged to choose whatever color they prefer.

I love drawing with pastels-- they are so bright and fun! Out of all of the lessons I taught in public school, the van Gogh-inspired pastel drawings were probably the most consistently popular (and successful). This class is an extension and expansion of those inspiring projects!
