US Grade 4 - 7
This class will train learners how to imagine, plan, write, and revise a clear, strong, paragraphs across four modes: expository, argumentative, persuasive, and narrative. Each class will start with a prompt of the day followed by a mini-lecture about paragraph structure for the day's mode. We will use a graphic organizer that will scaffold the outlining process. Learners will draw this graphic organizer on a piece of paper so they can reproduce it on demand. Each class, learners will outline, draft, and revise one paragraph while getting feedback from the teacher. Week of 20 April: Prompt of the day: "Describe your favorite meal" (Expository) Week of 27 April: Prompt of the day: "What makes a better pet, a cat or a dog?" (Argumentative) Week of 4 May: Prompt of the day: "Pizza is better than chocolate" or "Chocolate is better than pizza" (Persuasive) Week of 11 May: Prompt of the day: "Tell me a story about a time you were afraid" (Narrative)
Learning Goals
Students will learn a research-based and systematic approach to developing their essay writing. Students will be able to confidently write expository, argumentative, persuasive, and narrative paragraphs.
Other Details
Supply List
A couple pencils, an eraser, a notebook, and the standard Outschool tools. Headsets are preferred but not required. Students are encouraged to write their work by hand, but accommodations can be made for those who feel strongly about typing.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
