Beginner - Intermediate Level
This semester-long course is designed for students eager to master the art of writing across five distinct genres: narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and opinion. Each class will provide a structured, step-by-step approach to the writing process, guiding students from brainstorming and outlining to drafting, revising, and publishing. Through interactive lessons, examples, and peer discussions, students will develop their writing skills, creativity, and confidence as they learn how to craft compelling essays, stories, and persuasive pieces. Course Structure: Genre Focus: Each genre will be introduced and explored in-depth. You will learn the unique characteristics of narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and opinion writing, with a strong emphasis on how to structure and develop each piece effectively. Step-by-Step Process: We will break down the writing process into manageable steps: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and publishing. Each week, we will focus on one genre, guiding you through every step in a collaborative and supportive environment. Class Activities: Classes will consist of: Genre Overview: We will explore the features and purpose of each genre with relevant examples. Brainstorming and Idea Sharing: You will engage in discussions to generate ideas, gather feedback, and refine your thoughts. Outlining and Structuring: We will guide you through outlining your ideas to ensure your writing has clear direction and organization. Drafting: You will begin writing drafts of your pieces, applying the skills learned during the brainstorming and outlining stages. Revision: We will cover techniques for revising your drafts, including peer feedback and teacher-guided suggestions to enhance clarity, organization, and style. Publishing: You will have the opportunity to publish your final drafts, either within the course or in a portfolio format. Genres Covered: Narrative Writing: Learn to craft stories that entertain and engage readers. You will focus on structure, plot development, character creation, and how to capture emotions through storytelling. Descriptive Writing: Focus on painting vivid pictures with words. You will explore sensory details, figurative language, and how to create compelling scenes and settings. Expository Writing: Master the art of explaining ideas clearly and logically. You will learn how to break down complex topics into digestible information and present facts in an organized manner. Persuasive Writing: Develop persuasive arguments by learning how to structure logical, compelling essays that convince readers to agree with your viewpoint. Opinion Writing: Express your views confidently and support them with strong reasoning. You will explore how to develop opinions backed by facts, examples, and clear reasoning. Additional Features: Pre-assessment and Post-assessment: At the start and end of the course, you will complete a short writing exercise to measure your growth and understanding of the writing process. Homework and Practice: You may be assigned optional homework or practice assignments to reinforce the concepts learned in class and allow for additional feedback and improvement. Support: Outside of class, I will provide feedback on your drafts, offer individualized suggestions for improvement, and answer any questions you may have. By the end of the course, you will have completed five polished pieces of writing, one for each genre, and gained a comprehensive understanding of how to approach any writing task with confidence and skill. This course is ideal for students who wish to improve their writing abilities, whether for school assignments, personal projects, or future career goals. It is suitable for students of all levels who are motivated to develop their writing through a structured, creative, and collaborative approach.
