This class is an immersive experience for young artists who would like to learn to draw realistic people using a number of different techniques and materials. All of the materials needed will be listed below in the materials section. Each week, we will meet and prepare for specific artwork and subject matter and will then spend numerous class periods to thoroughly complete the work to satisfaction. Students will be taught to develop strong observational skills to better improve detail work. No prior experience is required, both beginners and advanced drawers will be challenged on an individual basis. I am an excited teacher that works to teach students within a growth mindset and challenge them to see amazing results. My classroom environment is fun and encouraging and allows for a lot of opportunity to bond with other students. I am flexible to each student and their comfort zones; students are encouraged to show their work during class in order to get helpful feedback. However, if they are uncomfortable with this, I will work with them to show it after class or to send photos of progress through the Outschool messaging.

Please note that joining at any time is absolutely fine and welcomed as I often work to fill new students in on previous material and much of the early material is reviewed as we work on new techniques.
Class schedule

Week 1- Learning and practicing rule-of-thumb facial dimensions with a regular pencil.
week 2- First Drawing project with pencil. Discussion on changing way of thinking. Students and I will be working from the same reference photo and will work together to draw an accurate representation.
Week 3- Line drawing is completed. Shading with pencil begins on half of the face. Other half is completed with colored pencil.
Week 4- Finish Project 1. Second Drawing Project. Students will find their own reference photos of person of choice and will be required to download the app "Grid#" on a phone available. Students will complete their grid and begin the line drawing if time.
Week 5- Work on line drawing.
Week 6- Finish line drawing if not completed. Thorough charcoal shading with guidance and feedback.
Week 7- Third Project. New approach to charcoal!! Photo options will be provided. For a challenge, photos will revolve around elderly people to improve detail work.
Week 8- Continue working on project.
Week 9- finish project.
Week 10-Demonstration and practice of pen shading techniques. Students will need to create a gradient for each process. Fourth project. Ball-point pen only. Optional, numerous colors. Photo options will be provided and will revolve around drawing babies. This will help develop skills with drawing proportions as babies do not have the same proportions as adults and can be difficult to draw.

Dear Families,
I have loved and cherished art for my entire life and my hope is that I may be able to ignite or strengthen this love for art within my students. I want to extend to you and your child my warmest welcome into my virtual classroom.
My philosophy for learning in the art room revolves around differentiating instruction for each student’s individual needs. Coming together into the classroom, we each bring with us our goals, desires, our histories, our struggles, and our joys. Art allows us to express these aspects about ourselves and I believe it is important to do so. Through each of our projects, I will work with every individual learner to adjust the parameters to their interests and skill set while challenging them to always push forward.
Through my virtual classroom, I will be teaching art classes in painting, drawing, and even some sculpture for all ages and for all creative minds! We will work with a wide variety of materials, techniques, and analytical thought processes in each of my classes.
Through my undergraduate career, I received a BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture and a BSE in K-12 Art Education, both in the spring of 2023. Beginning in the Fall of 2023, I will be pursuing a Master's in Fine Art in the highly ranked MFA program at Arizona State University. I have been teaching on Outschool since May of 2020 and have assisted artists in residence and students at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in Vermont during their summer 2022 stone carving workshops. I have created and sold a wide variety of artwork professionally, such as drawings, paintings, and sculptures, and have exhibited in a variety of art galleries. I am highly passionate about art and I strongly believe that when doing artwork, you are building a relationship with your materials and the creation itself. Throughout my time doing and practicing artwork, I have learned that art is a powerful force that can be meditative and help connect you with yourself and the values you carry.
With all this being said, I am happy to receive any comments, questions, or concerns through Outschool messaging. I look forward to working with your child and supporting them in every step of the process through their artistic endeavors!

Sincerely,
Amelia LaChance
