Mastering Study Skills in High School
Class experience
Study Skills are important for learners to succeed, but nor a skill many students acquire naturally. In this ongoing class students will spend each class acquiring skills like note taking, test preparation, flash cards, creating mnemonic devices, and scheduling their time to improve their study skills. While content topics are cycled every 8 to 10 weeks, the actual lesson content is varied to address different learning styles and to reinforce earlier lessons. As per scientific studies,...
Students will improve their study skills by learning how to take effective notes, use those notes to prepare for tests, implement mnemonic devices for easier recall, create flash cards for vocabulary and hard to remember content, how to manage schedules and time, how to use time to study effectively, goal setting, and other strategies the teacher may find helpful depending upon the learners in the class. This class is for students who struggle academically, or who need additional learning time to master a particular skill. It is NOT a good class for high achieving students seeking ways to refine their skills.
I created a study skills class and in person tutoring program for at risk high school students, and an online study skills and tutoring program for at risk college students. The skills are transferable to students of all ages.
