A well-written paragraph is the foundation of all great writing! This class goes beyond the basics, helping learners develop the skills to add meaningful details, vary sentence structure, and write cohesively in different styles. Whether for essays, creative writing, or test responses, the techniques taught in this class will build confidence and independence in young writers. Each week, students will follow a structured approach to writing a strong paragraph. We will cover brainstorming, organizing, topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusions. Lessons cycle through narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing every three weeks, with fresh topics and mini-lessons each time. Each class introduces a new skill, such as using sensory language, punctuation, or varying sentences. Students will begin to work on their paragraph during class and are encouraged to finish it after class. This class is designed for intermediate writers looking to build confidence. Students should be able to write a paragraph on their own. If they are new to paragraph writing, students are encouraged to first take the class: Introduction to Paragraph Writing. Students are encouraged to share their writing with me for feedback. Start and stop at any time! Lessons do not have a strict beginning or endpoint By the end of this class, learners will have stronger writing skills, a deeper understanding of paragraph structure, and the confidence to express themselves clearly in writing. Week of April 28: Descriptive (Using the writing process - brainstorming, and narrowing the topic, and sensory language Week of May 5: Descriptive (Using the writing process - topic sentence and word choice) Week of May 12: Descriptive(supporting details and concluding sentence and compound and complex sentences) Week of May 19: Descriptive (checking for unity and coherence, and figurative language) Week of May 26: Narrative (using the writing process - brainstorm, consistent verb tense) Week of June 2: Narrative (using the writing process - narrow the topic, voice) Week of June 19: Narrative (writing the first draft - punctuation, comma, semicolon) Week of June 16: Narrative (revise and edit - avoid using overused/boring verbs)
