What's included
Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students will be encouraged to watch videos, complete homework, complete quizzes, and ask/answer questions that are posted in the classroom.Assessment
I will provide ongoing feedback to learners and students will also receive scores on assessments.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
This is a FLEX class with communication posts, activities, resources, and/or assignments to keep students engaged. FLEX courses do not have live meetings, however I am willing to provide 1:1 instruction if extra support is needed. Students should plan to solve problems and complete activities independently using the provided resources. In addition, student/ teacher interaction will occur through a variety of discussion topics on Outschool and Nearpod. There will be real-life scenario questions and/or projects relevant to the skills covered in this class. Other games and activities (Quizizz, Kahoot, Prodigy, Arcademics, etc) will be included to ensure high quality interaction between all participants. Students will receive a progress report to identify and tackle any challenges. Individualized instruction and extra support are provided to accommodate all learners. With effort, success will be evident in this class. Elementary students are welcome to enroll and get a head start on higher-level math! This course will also offer remediation for students that may have gaps in their math foundation. I offer differentiated instruction and provide a variety of assignments and tasks to reach all students. Students will receive and be responsible for watching videos, reviewing handouts, and completing activities and assignments weekly for each skill taught in this course. Email is an alternative option to receive responses in a timely manner. There will be posts on the classroom page to keep communication open. This course is similar to the live class, but is an alternative means for learners who cannot participate in the scheduled live classes due to scheduling conflicts, comfort level or unfamiliarity with the live version of the class. This also provides learners an opportunity to engage with the teacher and classmates through weekly guided discussions. I will provide ongoing feedback to learners and respond to questions or concerns. This flexible learning course will offer a sense of community so we can each learn from each other's observations, thinking, and experiences. Self-discipline and motivation are necessary for success. Students are also encouraged to ask/answer questions that are posted in the classroom. PREREQUISITES: Students should be comfortable with basic fractions, basic multiplication and division facts, and decimal operations which are taught in the elementary level. Here are the skills taught and a sample schedule. The schedule and levels will be adjusted as needed (determined by individual student growth and need). The class can exceed the 12 weeks to allow for extra time and support if needed. Week 1: Exponents and perfect squares Week 2: Fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, percents Week 3: Integers, absolute value, ratios Week 4: Multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers Week 4: Solve single-step and multi-step practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers Week 5: Solve practical problems involving operations with integers Week 6: Circumference and area of a circle Week 6: Area and perimeter of triangles and rectangles. Week 7: Coordinate Plane Week 7: Congruence of segments, angles, and polygons. Week 8: Circle graph data Week 9: Mean, Median, Mode, Range Week 9: Proportional relationships Week 10: One-step linear equations Week 11: One-step linear inequalities Week 12: Review, support, putting it all together!
Learning Goals
The standards include a focus on rational numbers and operations involving rational numbers. Students will use ratios to compare data sets; recognize decimals, fractions, and percents as ratios; solve single-step and multistep problems, using positive rational numbers; and gain a foundation in the understanding of and operations with integers. Students will solve problems involving area and perimeter, and begin to graph in a coordinate plane. In addition, students will build on the concept of graphical representation of data developed in the elementary grades and develop concepts regarding measures of center. Students will solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, and use algebraic terminology. Students will represent proportional relationships using two variables as a precursor to the development of the concept of linear functions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Teaching Certificates
Virginia Teaching Certificate in English to Speakers of Other Languages
Virginia Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from University of Mary Washington
I have been teaching in the public schools since 2002, and have been teaching online since 2017. After completing my Bachelor's Degree, I was immediately offered a positon in Special Education. I returned to graduate school and completed my Master's Degree. I am certified in General and Special Education and English as a Second Language. Being a teacher with a learning disability in a low-income, rural, and diverse public school, understanding and accommodating individual student needs (gifted, special education, language barriers, etc) comes naturally.
Thinking about my own experience in education, I appreciate the incredible impact that teachers have on the lives of young people. I know that teachers provide skills and knowledge used by young people throughout life. Therefore, as a teacher, my greatest aim is to be a role model. I want to cultivate open minds, the knowledge and ability to look at the world critically, and students belief in their own capacity to make positive contributions to society.
