What's included

1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hours
Homework
Students will learn the 5 basic chemical equations and how each plays a part in their lives: these equations are composition, decomposition, combustion, single replacement, and double replacement. Students will learn how to balance these equations by applying the law of conservation of mass & energy.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 10
Class explores types of chemical equations & how to balanced each. Practical visual illustrations and examples are provided for students so that they can connect concepts to real-life. Students will learn easy to remember tips and tricks.

Students will interact initially with me via conversation about the subject. This will help gauge the student's current level of understanding. Then based on this conversation I will help the student better understand and hopefully master the subject.

Student will learn by guided examples, meaningful illustrations, and asking clarifying questions of each other and me. I will attempt to ensure that each student's understanding is growing at their own pace. Students are invited to help other students with their questions as well.

Learning Goals

I will share the 5 basic chemical equations with students. Various pictures and images will be provided so that students and see equations in real-world applications. Students will be asked to share areas in their lives where these chemical equations occur. Students will be able to ask questions of me and react to responses from other students. I believe that student-student interaction is crucial for learning. Students may attempt to explain or give an example to another student.

Students will be shown how to write and prove that a chemical equation is balanced. Several methods, tips, and trick (e.g. "CHO" method), will be explored to help students master this concept.

Class will be divided into 3 sections. The first section will observe me "doing" the concepts of chemical equations. The second section will have the "students doing" and practicing the concepts learned. Finally, students will provide feedback and examples for each other's work.

I am a middle school and high school math and science teacher with 10 years of experience. Additionally, I am a homeschooling dad of 13+years who has four kids that are four different types of learners.

I have the privilege to teach many subject areas, but biology & chemistry are my favorite as they applies to all other areas of science. My opinion is that if a student understands the these major concepts, other sciences become more clear.

I am an avid gardener and enjoy building things with my hands. Best part in my own lifelong learning process is when things don't go as planned. That, for me, is when curiosity and learning takes place.

I hold a MS and BS in the natural sciences.
