Are you interested in learning about influential composers throughout music history? Do you love playing or listening to classical music? Then this is the class for you! In this month-long course, we will read about Johann Sebastian Bach, listen to some of his compositions, and talk about Baroque musical styles and instruments. In my lessons, I like to get student input and show them pictures of the different places and instruments that we talk about. Students do not need any musical experience in order to take this class. Week 1: We will begin class by establishing a bit of the history at the time of J.S. Bach's birth. We'll look at maps, drawings of the landscape and architecture and briefly review some important historical figures alive in the late 1600's. Then, I will read the first chapter from Opal Wheeler's book, "Sebastian Bach: The Boy from Thuringia." (Students can read along too!) As we read, I will show them illustrations of the instruments and locations that are mentioned. Next, we'll dive into the second chapter of the book and listen to two of Bach's early compositions. At the end of class, the students will get their weekly assignment. Week 2: I will start class by asking the students to share what they discovered from their homework assignment. After this discussion, we will read chapter three of the book. As we read, we will pause to listen to several more pieces that Bach wrote in his young adult years. The students will also learn about some Baroque musical styles before getting their assignment for the week. Week 3: Similar to previous weeks, we will start class by reviewing what the students found for their assignments before jumping into the next chapter of our book. Since this is a shorter chapter, we'll spend more time focusing on Bach's contemporaries. We will end class with the weekly assignment. Week 4: We will discuss our thoughts and opinions on Bach's compositions, comparing them to some other pieces by different Baroque composers. We'll then read the fifth and final chapter of the book and end class by listening to a cheery dance. I look forward to lively discussions and actively listening with you as we take an in-depth look into J.S. Bach's life! Punctuality policy: If none of the students arrive within 10 minutes of the class start time (unless you've sent me a message beforehand explaining they will be late), I will end the meeting and you will be charged for the class fee. In order to avoid missed classes, please send me a message before the meeting!
