Are you interested in learning about influential composers throughout music history? Do you love playing or listening to classical music? Then this is the class for you! In this month-long course, we will read about George Frideric Handel, listen to his compositions, and talk about Baroque musical styles and instruments. In my lessons, I like to get student input and show them pictures of the different places and instruments that we talk about. Students do not need any musical experience in...
Students will learn about the important events in Handel's life. Students will actively listen to Baroque music. Students will compare and contrast different musical styles. Students will identify Baroque musical instruments. Students will articulate their thoughts on Handel's compositions. Students will analyze the art and culture from this time period
I have my Bachelor in Music Education from New York University and have studied methods of teaching general music from various world cultures. In addition to my academic knowledge of music history and theory, I had a year of student teaching experience in general music classrooms in New York City.
Week 1: Listen and compare Handel's motet, "Silete venti" to his cantata, "Tra le fiamme". Write a paragraph about your observations. Week 2: In his lifetime, Handel played the spinet, harpsichord, organ, violin and oboe. The students will get a worksheet that leads them through identifying and categorizing each of these Baroque instruments. They will also have the chance to listen to various instruments from different instrument families! Week 3: Watch the video Classical Music 101: What is Opera? to get an idea of the history and genre of opera. Write at least 3 facts you learned about opera from the video. *I will also post resources for students to watch adaptations of famous operas if they are interested!
Students will need to either write or type up their assignments in order to turn them in.
Students will need to submit their work to me before the day we meet so that they can actively participate in discussion at the start of class. I'll only assess whether they've completed the assignment but if you would like a letter grade, I'm happy to submit one after the relevant class meeting.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
We will read "Handel, At the Court of Kings" by Opal Wheeler. Students will be directed to Painted Sky Opera, which is a website with resources on kid-friendly adaptations of famous operas. I will use either Spotify or Youtube when we listen to Handel's compositions.
