Beginner Level
In this 8-week course, students will be introduced to multiplication for the first time, and students will learn and practice all topics of third grade multiplication including equal groups, arrays, multiplication facts and word problems. At the beginning of class, the students and teacher will have a discussion about the topic(s) of the week so the teacher can assess the students’ prior knowledge of the subject. Throughout the class, the teacher will introduce and teach the topic(s) using the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method. This instructional method starts with the teacher giving an example, followed by the teacher and student solving a problem or completing a task together, then finally, the student is given a problem or task to complete on his/her own, with support given as necessary. All classes will include instruction, practice, and application problems (word problems). Homework and review material will be provided after class, but it is optional. The schedule for this course will be as follows: Day 1 - Equal Groups and Arrays Day 2 - Multiplication Facts of 2 and 5 & Commutative Property Day 3 - Multiplication Facts of 3, 1, and 0 & Distributive Property Day 4 - Multiplication Facts of 4 and 6 Day 5 - Multiplication Facts of 7 and 9 Day 6 - Multiplication Facts of 8 Day 7 - Review/Revise Multiplication Facts Day 8 - Multiply by Multiples of 10 Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, help the students to relate to the lesson, and introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 7 to 9, or those students looking to learn and practice multiplication for the first time. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class.
