In this self-paced course, learners will dive into the process of writing an argument essay, a literary analysis, and an expository essay, using topics that are of interest to them. Writing should be FUN!

Homework
1 hour per week. Learners will be working on their essays in this self-paced course, but I will be there to help with ideas, editing, feedback, and more, giving written and video feedback
Letter Grade
Using the enrichment activities in this course and the final grades on the three essays, I can provide a formal grade report if those are turned in to me. I also use the rubrics as feedback on the final essays. If you want a formal, final grade report at the end of the course, please let me know, and I will provide that for you!

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This course will prepare learners for both high-school and college-level writing expectations. Tailored for learners who seek a flexible learning pace, this course is a deep dive into the art of effective writing. The course is structured to enhance your writing skills and prepare you for higher academic challenges, starting with the foundations of essay writing three different types of essays: the expository essay, the literary analysis, and the final, culminating essay, the argument essay.

I will be reviewing enrichments and providing feedback Fridays/Sundays each week for up to 14 weeks if you are taking this course as a self-paced option. 

Course Format:
Enjoy the flexibility of this course, designed to accommodate different learning styles and paces. With a blend of short instructional videos and independent writing, this course provides a rich learning experience that will fit anyone’s schedule.  I will provide a multitude of helpful handouts, outlines, guides, and my own essay writing samples learners can use for literally any essay they write.

Lesson 1:
Introduction to Formal Essay Writing
 This lesson covers what formal essay writing is and isn’t, along with the steps to the essay writing process. 
Lesson 2:
Writing a Solid Thesis Statement and Topic Sentences
 After choosing a topic, the first step of the writing process is building the perfect thesis statement. 
Lesson 3:
MLA Crash Course
 Most people who write essays don’t understand that there is a specific, universal way of citing evidence and formatting essays. This is called MLA, and this crash course is a guide through the process of properly citing and formatting an essay. 
Lesson 4:
Introduction to the Expository Essay
 This lesson describes what expository writing is, what types of topics one can write about, and a demonstration of how to set up the notes document.

Learners will be provided handouts for class in addition to the videos uploaded.  Please have access to Google Docs (preferred) or Microsoft Word.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
