In this mini course, students will learn everything needed to be empowered for fraction operations for any math class.

Class Experience

The following topics/strategies will be taught in this course:

-Week of February 28: Representing fractions (in pictures, on a number line, in pie charts)
-Week of March 7: Understanding Equivalent Fractions (includes simplifying fractions)
-Week of March 14: Changing Between Fractions and Mixed Numbers
-Week of March 21:  Adding Fractions and Mixed Numbers (includes problem solving)
-Week of March 28: Nuances to subtracting fractions and subtraction of mixed numbers (includes problem solving)
-Week of April 4: Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers (includes problem solving)
-Week of April 11: Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers (includes problem solving)
-Week of April 18: Order of Operations with Fractions (Putting It All Together)

Each session will begin with a warm-up, a launch problem, demonstration, and practice set presented on Google slides. Short math videos may accompany a lesson as part of a launch or demonstration.

Students will be given an exit slip at the end of each session and results will be given the following session or an exit question with feedback at the end of each class.

Students who are ready for this topic are students who already have experience with multiplication and division.  Problems will go from basic to advanced.

Students can use an old math notebook to try out their problems.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
