Description

Class Experience

Students will solidify and define what they are interested in and how those interests fit into their world. Then they will work with their parents to determine two - four specific academic learning targets and at least one life success skill (like creativity or collaboration) to master through the project completion.
I’m National Faculty with PBL Works, conducting professional development in the research-backed elements of project-based learning. I've helped hundreds of educators create and implement projects connected to a public product and purpose for their students. I truly believe that it's time to start teaching students themselves how to create their own projects, empowering them to own their learning and have voice and choice!

After being a stay-at-home mom for several years, I co-founded a charter school where students completed projects aligned to their interests and passions, with integrated content standards embedded into their individual project designs. Additionally, students had internships two days a week as part of their school day.

I went on to become principal of New Technology High School, the flagship school of the New Tech Network which now supports 200 schools. I created a 501c3 non-profit, the Center For Excellence training center, hosting over 1,000 visitors from around the world annually who wanted to better understand project-based learning.
Homework will include:
1. Interest exploration and discovering your talents and how you want to impact your world
2. Project search and exploration
3. Outreach and communication with an outside expert, asking questions and seeking guidance
4. Seek parent or expert input on learning targets
5. Draft project ideas to share with others in the class
6. Optional: Collaboration with classmates to create a shared project design
I will provide the student with a few handouts, including an outline for project design that includes key elements, learning targets and how the student will be evaluated for their finished public product(s) in the real world.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be asked to interview (virtual or face to face) experts from the real world. Parents are welcome to participate or listen-in to these conversations.
