Teacher expertise and credentials
North Carolina Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
2 Degrees
Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from Chonnam National University, South Korea
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Clemson University
I have over 10 years of experience teaching math, beginning with my time as a college student when I taught high school-level Algebra 1 & 2 and Precalculus at a math institution. Since 2022, I have also been tutoring online, focusing primarily on algebra-related subjects, and for the past 3 years, I’ve tutored elementary math to children aged 7-9 at the Korean Center in Greenville, SC.
My teaching journey includes time at Bailey Middle School in North Carolina, where I taught math while completing my middle school math degree through student teaching at UNC Charlotte. Afterward, I continued at Bailey Middle School as a math substitute for about a year. Earlier in my career, I spent 3 years teaching high school-level math at a math institution in South Korea while pursuing my college degree.
I hold a middle school math teaching certificate, earned from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2012. In addition, I have a Computer Science degree from Clemson University, where I graduated magna cum laude in 2003, and a Chemical Engineering degree from Chonnam National University in South Korea, obtained in 1999.
I am passionate about teaching and have formed close bonds with my students, many of whom have gone on to excel in math and pursue math-related degrees. While I currently teach middle school math, I aspire to return to teaching high school-level math.
My lessons are designed to engage students with carefully crafted word problems, enjoyable activities, and a strong emphasis on mastering key math concepts. I aim to create lessons that make learning math fun and memorable.
I encourage students to independently explore mathematical problems and concepts, guiding them through questions to foster critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding. My teaching methods are tailored to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and interests, ensuring that each student’s needs are met, promoting inclusive learning, and helping everyone succeed. I integrate word problems that involve complex, real-world situations into my lessons, allowing students to apply various math concepts over time. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of articulating reasoning and engaging in discussions to enhance communication, deepen understanding, and facilitate peer learning. Visual aids are used to help students, especially visual and kinesthetic learners, grasp abstract concepts. My focus on mastery learning ensures that knowledge is solidified before moving on to new topics.
In addition to my teaching experience, I authored an American idiom book that was used as a textbook at several English academies in South Korea. For fun, I used to run a YouTube channel where I translated American pop songs into Korean. I’m skilled in video editing and content creation, which I believe can enhance my ability to create engaging and dynamic lessons.
