Marvelous Metamorphosis: A Fascinating/Hands-on Discovery about Mealworms
In this four-day class, students will dive into an in-depth study of the lifecycle, behavior, and anatomy of their very own mealworms. They will learn how to care for them, using materials from home, and conclude with an experiment.

Description
Class Experience
DAY I-Students will learn: how to properly set up and care for their mealworms, about metamorphosis (complete and incomplete), the basic needs of mealworms, and how to provide what they need, the origin of mealworms, how to properly say the scientific name of mealworms, how to properly observe and record their mealworms. DAY II-Students will learn: the anatomy of their mealworms (an in-depth look). DAY III -Students will learn: how to properly conduct an experiment using their mealworms, using the scientific method. DAY IV- Students will learn: how to properly record and present their findings to the class.
There are no sensitive topics during this class.
Homework will be assigned each day. Day I & Day II will take 15-20 minutes. Day III may take an hour or two, depending on how in-depth the student's experiment and/or presentation is. No homework for Day IV. The project will be done individually. Students will be required to read one article on Day I for homework. The rest of their homework experience is through hands-on activity and technology.
3 files available upon enrollmentThe student will be provided with a downloadable, 25-page workbook, a list of required material and a parent letter discussing the objectives taught and enrichment activities that parents can do with students after the class has been completed. Materials Needed: Mealworms ($3.00 - $4.00), empty box (plastic works best), oatmeal, fruit/vegetables (carrot, apple, or pear), a meat tray. Optional: Thermometer, tweezers, magnifying lens, Metric ruler.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners will be assessed through their verbal communication, discussion, and presentation at the end of the session.
