In this multi-day class learners will be able to identify, read and create three different types of graphs: concrete graphs, pictographs and bar graphs. I believe in modelling and asking questions to check for understanding. I also use questioning to extend a learner's thinking. Here is an outline of each day: Day 1 --Concrete Graphs -- learners will pour their pack of M&Ms out and sort them into colour groups. Next they will arrange them on the concrete graph handout by colour and write the colours down on the handout. We will give our concrete graph a title. Learners will take a picture (optional) and can upload it to the classroom if they want. We will learn how to record our data using a tally chart. They will need the data (tally chart) for Day 2. Then we are going to repeat the process with different colours of Lego. Now what would the title be? Day 2 -- Pictographs -- I will show an example of a pictograph and ask learners what do they notice and what do they wonder about this graph? We will discuss why a particular picture was used, scale (how much each picture represents) and meaningful titles. After observing the key features of a pictograph students will choose to create a pictograph for either their M&M data or their Lego data. Early finishers can create a 2nd pictograph for the other set of data. We will discuss what a reasonable scale is and leaners will be n examples of both reasonable and unreasonable scales for a set of data. Day 3 -- Bar Graphs -- For bar graphing we will need a bigger set of data. So for this one we will use 2 regular sized bags of M&Ms (approx 100 M&Ms) or 100 pieces of lego. Learners can choose. We will look at an example of a bar graph and learners will be invited to make observations using the notice and wonder prompts. We will discuss, scale, labels and title. I will ask questions for each step so that we collaborate as a group when creating our bar graphs. I will also model each step. Day 4 --Review -- We will review the key features of each type of graph and practice reading examples of each, by asking and answering questions about them. Learners will also share which one is their favourite graph and why. ***Learners will also receive practice worksheets where they can collect new data and create more of their favourite graphs***

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome to my profile page! My name is Ms. Liz and I'm a passionate educator who loves teaching grade 2-7 learners specific writing strategies. I have lots of experience working with learners who don’t like to write. I’m an enthusiastic writer myself and my number one goal for your learner is to help them become a confident writer. I support my leaners every step of the way in their writing journey. I am currently writing my first kids novel and I bring this expertise into my virtual classroom, as well as examples of specific writing strategies taken from my book. Learning should be fun and students should have voice and choice in what they learn. To this end, when teaching writing I always let students choose what they would like to write about. Then I embed the writing skills we are going to practice into the topic they have chosen. This usually helps to motivate all leaners, but especially learners who don’t enjoy writing yet. I really love giving students opportunities to explore their own interests and through this they discover and develop their unique writer’s voice. Above all I believe that learners should write about what matters to them, because when they do they discover the joy of writing.
I have a Bachelors of Education and a teacher librarian diploma, both from the University of British Columbia. While I was in university, I tutored for several different companies as well as privately tutored learners in Math, Reading and Writing. I have a growing interest in educational technology which is why I am currently completing my masters in it. I have been a K-7 classroom teacher in brick and mortar schools for eleven years and a teacher librarian for two years.
I became a teacher, because I love being part of the "aha" moment a student has when they finally grasp a concept they have been struggling with or when they overcome a fear (think public speaking). I consider it an honour to be part of a student's learning journey and am always thinking about how I can best serve their individual needs and make it fun!

I am currently re-reading the entire Wings of Fire series (I can't stop) and really looking forward to The Flames of Hope (book #15) coming out this April. I love to read as you may have guessed. I also enjoy writing and one day I would like to publish a children's book. I play ultimate frisbee in the summer and I love knitting and baking. I'm looking forward to embarking on an exciting learning journey with you!
