Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
There are many ways in which we use reading and writing in our everyday lives and one of these is by using maps. Maps can be mysterious, showing the location of a hidden treasure, they can be informative, helping us find our way to a friend’s house or they can spark our imagination, representing a world that only exists in our mind. In this one-time class, we will look at a few examples of different types of maps, noticing what information and symbols maps usually include. Then we will start creating maps of our own, brainstorming what to include and how to represent those ideas with pictures, letters and/or words. The goal is not to complete a finished product by the end of the class, but for children to get started on the map-making process together, and to ignite an interest in map making. Including maps and map making in play can become a meaningful way for children to continue to develop their literacy skills. When children naturally bring their literacy development into their play, they can grow into more confident readers and writers over time.

This class is designed for children with a range of literacy skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development. If your child is slightly outside of the age range, but you believe they would benefit from this class, feel free to reach out to me to see if it is a match. I strive to provide an inclusive learning environment and celebrate all levels of literacy development.

Learning Goals

The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in playful and meaningful ways both in class and afterwards at home. I believe that learning to read and write is a process that develops gradually with support, time and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing letters and/or words, recognizing symbols, letters and/or words). The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development and to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways.
