Class Experience

Become part of the Marvel Universe! In this class we will use the free Marvel Super Heroes Basic Rules to create an original character to play a Marvel role playing game!

Please note: This is not a drawing class. We will not be drawing original heroes. We will be creating a character for a Marvel role playing game. It will only exist in our imaginations.

In this class we will use a D&D like set of role-playing game rules to create a Marvel Super Hero RPG character. Maybe you were bitten by a radioactive animal! Maybe you were bombarded with cosmic rays! Maybe you were born a mutant with amazing powers! Maybe you've invented devices that give you super powers! Maybe you're an alien from space! You can create anything you can imagine in the Marvel Super Hero RPG. Students will be guided through the process of creating a character deciding the character's origin, powers, and abilities.

This class will be highly interactive. I will explain the basics of a role-playing game, then help students create their Marvel character. We will be going beyond the numbers of character creation and use our imaginations to decide what our characters were doing before they began their life of adventure.

While this is not a drawing class, we will discuss the visual depiction of the characters. I will suggest some online resources to help learners create a picture of their character.

Knowledge of role-playing games and Marvel Comics or movies is helpful, but not a requirement.

If time permits, we will play a very short introductory encounter.

Learning Goals
Role playing games are an excellent method to teach multiple hard and soft skills are the same time. Student will have the chance to work on their imagination, reading skills, and teamwork. The process of character creation will also bring their math and cost/benefit analysis skills into play. In addition, things like taking turns and speaking skills will be encouraged.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Ed!

I'm so happy to be teaching on Outschool!

I'm a professional puppeteer, a gamer, and a home school dad!

During my career as a puppeteer I've performed with the Muppets, the Jim Henson Company, and Sesame Street among others. I've been a puppeteer on feature films, tv shows, and videos throughout my 30+ year career. I have toured internationally with Walking with Dinosaurs-the Arena Spectacular for the past 11 years. Currently I own a company that tours throughout the Southeast.

As a home school dad I helped teach my son his entire school career.

I'm a huge fan of games, especially role-playing games! Playing a role playing game can improve skills like math, reading, comprehension, team work, and creative problem solving.

Students learn better when they are in an environment where they want to learn. Using puppetry and games, I've been able to educate students of all ages on a variety of topics. In fact, puppetry and games can be used to teach any subject under the sun!

Please look over my classes here on Outschool. If you have any questions or suggestions for classes you'd like to see, please get in touch with me!
