Amazing Fantasy #15 introduced the world to Spider-Man, one of the most well loved characters of the last 60 years! This class will take the form of a structured discussion. The instructor will introduce each topic and allow each learner a chance to contribute. Topics will include: What's your favorite part of the story? What's your favorite drawing in the story? Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko's respective contributions to the character. How the story holds up almost 60 years later. Is it still relatable or just a curiosity? Who is your favorite superhero? I bring enthusiasm for the characters and stories to match that of your learners! Spider-Man is introduced in the lead story of Amazing Fantasy #15. This story is included in any number of print collections of early Spider-Man stories and it is likely your local library system has one of them available. The story is also available digitally for $1.99 on Comixolgy and can be read online with a Marvel Unlimited subscription. I offer many more classes in the Marvel Comics Book Club series and a Marvel Unlimited subscription is the easiest way to access all the stories I will be discussing!
Learning Goals
Students will learn about story structure and pacing. The theme of power and responsibility will be discussed, as will Stan Lee's approach to dialogue and Steve Ditko's approach to design and storytelling.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The first appearance of Spider-Man is a story intended for the children of 1963 and is tame by today's standards. That said, the character of Spider-Man's uncle does die. The moment is key to propelling Spider-Man to realize the responsibility that comes with his new abilities. The murder happens off panel and the body is not shown.
Supply List
To fully participate in the discussion, students should have a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, containing the origin of Spider-Man. This story is included in any number of print collections of early Spider-Man stories and it is likely your local library system has one of them available. The story is also available digitally for $1.99 on Comixolgy and can be read online with a Marvel Unlimited subscription. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Seth McCombs. I am an author and illustrator of comics, graphic novels and children's books. I am part of the Teaching Artist roster for Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and spend much of my time visiting schools and libraries as a teacher.
I offer classes dedicated to the craft of comics storytelling! Comics (manga, graphic novels, etc) is a unique artform and no amount of drawing lessons can adequately prepare someone to do the jobs of director, cinematographer, screenwriter, set designer and actor all at once. I offer fun, activity based classes for younger students and deep dives into the craft for older kids. Basically, I offer the classes I wanted to take when I was growing up! Here is a coupon code good for one free session in either of my ongoing classes, Comics Makers Club or Sketchbook Club: MCCOMQ69O810
For the past 7 years I have run comics creation workshops with elementary school children and mentored high school seniors through their graphic novel projects. I have been reading, absorbing, studying and making comics for my entire life. I have a deep understanding of how to tell stories with pictures and I excel at teaching what I know. I truly love the comics medium; from superheroes to slice of life stories, I am fascinated by what it can do. In my classes, students will learn how to gracefully give and accept criticism. They will experience the energizing effect and the pride that comes with working alongside others who share your passion.
One year ago my wife and I adopted our first child. Being a father has become the single greatest joy of my life. I believe that energy carries over to my classes and translates as excitement for the potential of all my students!
