Class Experience
Topics: You will learn all kinds of martial arts styles throughout this four week course, this includes: * Traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate and the importance of Honor * Original movements of Chinese Kung-Fu and how to find balance or yin/yang * Advanced Korean Taekwondo techniques like flying and spinning kicks * Fun combinations and how to protect yourself using Jiu Jitsu, Hapkido, and Aikido. * End of the course: know the difference between martial art styles, gain self-confidence and respect and discipline Class Interaction: While there are no live meetings, weekly classes are delivered by a brief recorded video, downloadable write up with practice drills and plenty of opportunity to interact, broken down as follows: * Monday - Students view 30 to 45 minute video where I teach the basics of a particular martial art style. I will provide a brief narrative on the history and significance of the style and include some practice drill students can do on their own. * Tuesday - Thursday - Students use the Outschool classroom to discuss with each other and the teacher any questions they may have about martial arts. They can also post a picture or video demonstrating the techniques and receive positive critique to take their understanding to the next level. Monthly Class Schedule and Structure: * New techniques are taught each month including basics, katas, advanced movements, exercise drills, and self-defense * Each month is broken down as follows: * Week 1 - Karate - stances, blocks, strikes, and bushido (this class has lots of striking so have lots of energy) * Week 2 - Kung-Fu - coordination, movement, forms, and principles (do you know Jackie Chan and Jet Li?) * Week 3 - Taekwondo - advanced standing, spinning, and jumping kicks (bring a water bottle as you will sweat during this class) * Week 4 - Ju jitsu, Hapkido, and Aikido - combination, self-defense techniques and your code of honor * Each class - you will get lots of exercise by practicing different drills, learn the history and significance of particular styles and discuss all things related to martial arts. Students practice each style throughout the week. No prior knowledge is required. Returning students receive new material each month. Other Details
Parental Guidance
As this is a physical activity that students do on their own schedule, parental supervision is recommended. Please wear comfortable cloths, have adequate space available to move around freely, a water bottle handy to stay hydrated, and plenty of energy to practice the drills repeatedly. Lack of supervision may result in injury.
