Marshmallow Slime Dough (Exploring the 5 Senses)

In this one-time class, we will explore the 5 senses while we make dough (similar to slime) we can play with from marshmallows and 2 other "edible" ingredients. Parent supervision is highly recommended.

Class Experience

****I schedule a few weeks out at a time, if none of the times above work, click the button called "show alternative times" and create a new section. Often other learners will join in after a section is created.****

I have leftover marshmallows that did not get eaten in Smores (or in Hot Chocolate). Do you? Okay, maybe not. But if you have 6-18 spare marshmallows, join me as we make edible playdough. Yes, it is safe to eat, but I probably wouldn't since you will be touching it so much.

Since this project uses the microwave, an adult should be present for that part. It is hot when it comes out. We will wait until it cools some before we touch it.

After we make a few colors, we will then have an exploratory playtime with them. Show me what you can do with it. We will talk about the 5 senses while we make it and play with it.

Bring playdough cutouts or plastic knives to help you explore.

This is a one-time use dough. It does not store well for later.

Edible Supplies:
6-18 large marshmallows (you will need 6 marshmallows per color)
corn starch
coconut oil
food coloring

Other supplies:
cookie sheet or tray
microwave-safe bowl (one per color unless you want to mix colors)
hot pads to remove it from the microwave
1 Teaspoon measuring spoon
1 Tablespoon measuring spoon
1 stirring spoon (I just used a regular spoon I eat cereal with)

Learning Goals

The learners will be able to follow directions and measure accurately to make the best playdough.

I love looking around me and asking questions. "What if....?" Science is full of "what if" questions. Come explore simple science experiments with me. Most of the items can be found around your home or easily found at the store. I also have a love for math... especially math games. Join me as we make math fun! Many parents and learners appreciate the way I bring laughter to the classroom.

I have been an educator for 10 years: online ESL teacher for 5 years, and a Kindergarten teacher for 5 years before that. I have worked with children of all ages in various summer school and online activities. I have a Bachelor's in Music Education from Boise State University and a Masters in Pastoral Studies from Multnomah University. I live in Idaho, USA with my husband and my 2 young daughters (Ages 2 and 5). We enjoy reading books, getting a little messy, and taking walks together.
