Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
This course is the second of a two-part course. It is a modified version of a Science Elective course offered to high school and accelerated middle school students that I taught in NY. This second semester introduces the biological aspects, fishing methods, and environmental issues associated with the ocean.

As former students know, I teach with PowerPoint, Video, and Open Discussion (which is highly encouraged). The only requirement that I require is curiosity and a desire to learn. Much of my lesson design is via first-hand account of my years as a boat captain, fisherman, shark tagger, and marine science researcher.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to distinguish the anatomical and physiological differences between marine organisms in fine detail.
Students will be able to explain how a sustainable marine recreation organization works.

I am a Science Teacher with 24 years of experience in public schools. I have degrees in Marine Science, Natural Science, and Earth Science Education. Science is a passion that I have had since I was a boy. Learning Science should be fun,.... because SCIENCE is FUN ! I teach anything related to my degrees, such as Astronomy, Space Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Rocks and Minerals, Weather, Plate Tectonics, etc. with added courses on methods of data presentation such as Excel and PowerPoint. I have also taught Advanced Research Methods such as DNA Extraction, PCR, and Gel Electrophoresis. I am a huge nerd with Lord of the Rings, Marvel, Image, and D.C. Comics, and Science Fiction being my hobbies, along with reading, hiking, fishing, drawing, and model building. Having tagged sharks for 33 years, I am something of a "Shark Nerd" as well. I have taught science to students in grades 5 - 12, ran science fairs for elementary, middle, and high school students, and taught them presentation skills. I am very happy to be joining Outschool and look forward to working with students sharing the wonders of science !!!
