In this course, students will learn vocabulary related to school topics and common conversations that can occur at or about school. There will be an emphasis on really using the language to communicate, rather than on rote utterances. I will use visual aids, body movement, comic strips, and dialogues with puppets to teach students new vocabulary and how to deepen their communication. This class will involve lots of interaction and repetition to help students master the vocabulary and be able to begin communicating in Indonesian. The emphasis in this class will be on understanding spoken Indonesian, and then speaking it. Learners will be expected to try interacting and communicating from the very beginning. I will work to reassure students that mistakes are part of the learning process and create a safe and nurturing environment to try new things. This class will be most beneficial to students on an 'advanced beginner' level - students with some prior exposure to bahasa Indonesia, such as students who have taken some of my other Indonesian classes, or learned it in other contexts. If you are not sure if the level of this class is right for your learner, please contact me. Students are strongly encouraged to practice outside of class time in order to make good progress. Week 1: Practice greetings, asking a social questions such as 'how are you,' exchanging names, and sharing their favorite activities. Practice asking and answering "where are you going?" Learn several key nouns commonly found in school settings (classroom, teacher, books) through use of picture scenes Practice describing a classroom scene using new vocabulary in combination with previously learned vocabulary Week 2: Practice greetings, sharing something that happened during the week, and our feelings about it Practice describing school settings by comparing/contrasting a typical classroom in Indonesia and the United States Learn vocabulary for common school subjects studied in Indonesia through pictures, actions, and games Practice sharing likes and dislikes of school subjects Week 3: Practice greetings and social questions Learn new vocabulary connected to things done in school (e.g. read, write, make, etc.) through pictures, actions, and games Review use of sudah/belum with verbs and use to construct dialogues about schoolwork Week 4: Practice greetings and social questions Review actions and school subjects through 'would you rather' questions Practice relating simple narrative of a school day Practice sharing 'something which happened at school' simple narrative Each student will be encouraged to practice at their individual growth level.
