In this unique geography class, students will learn to recognize all seven continents, as well as the five oceans. From there, we will move on to the major countries on the N. American continent, and finally, we will begin learning about each state individually. Every class period, students will be challenged to show what they have learned through music, games and art. Students will be encouraged to draw their own replica maps of the areas being studies, complete with lines of latitude...
Students will learn to identify the seven continents and five oceans, with emphasis on lines of latitude and longitude. They will become familiar with the major countries of N. America, and will begin exploring the 50 states and learning to place them on a map.
I have been teaching in many different capacities for the past 18 years. I have managed preschool programs, and for the past six years, I have been highly involved as a mentor in many subjects for our local homeschool community. I have been teaching the "Mapping the World by Heart" curriculum for several years, however, I have adapted it and added additional resources to better suit the needs of my students.
There will be no formal homework assignments, however, students should be encouraged to practice their map skills throughout the week.
Students will need their weekly printouts, which will be found on the class page. They will also need scissors, glue, crayons, pencil, paper and (optional) construction paper for building their map projects.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There will be no formal assessment.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
A very helpful resource is an app called "Geotouch." This is not required, but it will help students to progress through learning the states. We will use the SeTerra.com website for additional practice. We will also use YouTube for songs and videos to supplement our lessons. Printouts will be provided on most weeks. Students should come to class with their printouts.
