In this one-time geography class students will explore how we get our three dimensional earth onto a two dimensional map. This class is hands on as each student makes their own 3D world creation (out of an orange) and tries to design a flat map of it. Students also have the opportunity to build a 3-d world from a printout if they are able to print. This class will be a combination of Google Slides, live teaching, and discussion in the Outschool Zoom Classroom. This experience will help...
Students will learn that there are many map projections that geographers and cartographers use to show our 3D earth on a 2D paper. Different projections have different accuracies, but they also have inaccuracies that distort the world as we see it. Students will be able to explain, using a map of their own design, why all world maps are not equal.
I have a B.A. in Political Science and a M.A. in Teaching. I have years of experience teaching middle school social studies, including units on geography. I love maps and puzzles and enjoy observing as students realize there is more to the world than meets the eye.
Students may need some additional time to finish the reflection at the end of the session.
1 file available upon enrollmentStudents need to have one orange, several pieces of paper, and a pencil. There are two pages from National Geographic to print out & cut that will be available immediately upon enrolling. Scissors, tape.

This exploration uses oranges (grapefruit is also ok). Students with citrus allergies can use gloves or contact me for alternative material ideas.
