You will draw a fantasy island and treasure route, applying design techniques to create an ancient-looking map. This is a great introduction to cartography and you will learn essential map drawing skills. Where is your treasure hidden?

Class experience

US Grade 2 - 4
1. Learn about building an interesting unique world map.
2. Develop the imagination and learn graphic design communication skills.
3. Learn concepts of scale, measurement, and the frame of reference for maps.

Benefits of map making are:
- Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west
- Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements
- Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map
I am a qualified schoolteacher and have taken many school classes to explore sites around London and then map them. I am also a trained artist and storyteller and bring geography and cultural studies alive through images and narratives. I have worked as a graphic web designer and taught visual communication to teenagers. Through the activity of making maps we will be activating the imagination and learning how to present ideas and solutions graphically.
Bring a pencil and eraser and your favourite art supplies -- and at least one large sheet of paper to draw on!
I suggest A3 - you can stick 2 sheets of printer paper together.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
