Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
In this class you learn how to draw a treasure map of an imagined island or whole fantasy world. The map we draw will contain all essential map-making elements and you will pick up the skills to represent them clearly: geographic symbols, a map key and a compass. You will be introduced to graphic design techniques that make your map look ancient so that you can create an 'authentic'- looking treasure map.

Class Structure:
I will show examples of beautiful treasure maps and present different graphic options to represent natural and man-made structures. Everyone will then draw their own island or continent. We will draw and discuss visual solutions on how to best represent our ideas, for example through scale, colour coding or compass coordinates. The aim is to design a treasure map that is interesting and imaginative. At the end of the class we will look at our maps, if you want, and share the backstory of the hidden treasure.

This class provides a creative framework for your child to explore the world around them and learn graphic ways of representing their spatial ideas. Through the activity of drawing maps your child learns to solve problems and to present ideas and solutions on paper. They will pick up map skills that empower them to draw visual representations of spaces they have in their mind.

** This is a prefect foundation for beginner map-makers with vivid imaginations - and for those who want to develop a fantasy world for a fiction story or games like DnD. If your child is imaginative and keen to start worldbuilding then I recommend my Imagined Kingdoms course as the next step to fantasy story writing - the link is here:

1. Learn about building an interesting unique world map.
2. Develop the imagination and learn graphic design communication skills.
3. Learn concepts of scale, measurement, and the frame of reference for maps.

Benefits of map making are:
- Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west
- Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements
- Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map
