Map Making: Draw a Magical Winter Map of the North Pole
Class experience
In this class we drawn an imaginary map of the North Pole. This is a fantasy map and not a realistic Artic circle map. Our map will contain both real geographic features (like mountains, trees and rivers) and imagined elements - such as a penguin school, an ice dragon cave or Santa's workshop. The map we draw will contain essential map-making elements and you will learn skills to represent them clearly on paper: geographic symbols, a map key and a compass. Class Structure: I will show...
Benefits of map making are: - Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west - Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements - Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map
I am a qualified schoolteacher and have taken many school classes to explore sites around London and then map them. I am also a trained artist and storyteller and bring geography and cultural studies alive through images and narratives. I have worked as a graphic web designer and taught visual communication to teenagers. Through the activity of making maps we will be activating the imagination and learning how to present ideas and solutions graphically.
Bring a pencil and eraser and your favourite art supplies -- and at least one large sheet of paper to draw on! I suggest A3 - you can stick 2 sheets of printer paper together.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will look at imaginary maps of Santa's village and draw on fantasy ideas of the North Pole being a magical place.
