Map Making: Discover and Draw Underground Cities
Class experience
In this class we explore underground and hidden cities that were created in history and discuss why they were built, and how they functioned. We look at specific features, such as air shafts and traps, found in underground structures and why they are useful. We examine different graphic options to represent depth and layers. Everyone will then draw their own underground city which includes essential features such as security, air and water sources. We will draw and discuss visual solutions...
1. Learn about ancient underground cities. 2. Develop the imagination and learn graphic design communication skills. 3. Learn concepts of scale, measurement, and the frame of reference for maps. Benefits of map making are: - Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west - Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements - Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map
I am a qualified schoolteacher and have taken many school classes to explore sites around London and then map them. I am also a trained artist and storyteller and bring geography and cultural studies alive through images and narratives. I have worked as a graphic web designer and taught visual communication to teenagers. Through the activity of making maps we will be activating the imagination and learning how to present ideas and solutions graphically.
Bring your favourite art supplies as well as at least one large sheet of paper to draw on! I suggest A3 - you can stick 2 sheets of printer paper together.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
